The Story of Richmond, Texas — The County Seat of Fort Bend
Richmond is the county seat of Fort Bend County — and this week on Fort Bend Friday, we're telling its story.
Richmond was settled in 1822 by Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred at a bend in the Brazos River, where a fort gave Fort Bend County its name. The town was laid out and incorporated by the Republic of Texas in 1837, and it has been the county seat since January 1838.
The 1908 Fort Bend County Courthouse, built in Texas Renaissance style with its copper dome, still serves today — and still anchors the town.
Just outside town, Morton Cemetery, established in 1825, holds Jane Long, the "Mother of Texas," and Mirabeau B. Lamar.
